Children and teachers keep writing to ask if and when I’m going to write another story about Anansi the Spider. I actually have one. The problem is that neither my editor, Mary Cash, nor Janet Stevens, the illustrator, is interested in doing it. Mary told me that she didn’t detect enough interest among the librarians she’s spoken to justify another Anansi. I’ve written to Janet several times. She hasn’t answered. I believe she’s very bush with other projects.
I did show the manuscript to another editor friend of mine. She wanted me to come up with something new. I’ll admit there isn’t much interest in a series that began with another publisher. If it’s such a great idea, why isn’t the original publisher bringing it out? Excellent question. What do I do now?
I could give up. That’s not me. Every problem has a solution. You can find it if you look hard enough. I’m meeting next week with one of our local publishers, Graphic Arts. I’m going to show them the new story and see what they say. I’ll let you know what happens.
