Old Friends

I just got back from having lunch with my friend Chris Wubbenhorst, who was one of the best children’s librarians I ever met. Unfortunately, about 20 years ago, budget cuts led her district to reduce the number of librarians. Chris was given the choice of going back to the classroom or looking for another job. She decided to move on, becoming a bus driver and finally one of the first drivers of the MAX trains on our light rail system.

Public transportation’s gain was definitely a loss for schools and children. How many schools lack a trained, knowledgeable librarian? Far too few. And yet we expect children to love to read. Sorry folks, putting up a poster with a picture of a celebrity hold a book just doesn’t cut it.
